What Comes Between Black Friday and Cyber Monday?

Small Business Saturday is November 24

It seems that every year that Thanksgiving gets more and more squeezed out between the big retail events of Halloween and Christmas. The antes are up with big box stores on one side with Black Friday, and online retailers enjoying Cyber Monday. Now, Small Business Saturday is designed to occur in between, focusing on bringing visibility to local small businesses, to help support the businesses in our own communities.

The holiday period is, of course, essential for many retailers. Small Business Saturday is a national initiative that marks a day to support the local businesses that create jobs, boost the economy and preserve neighborhoods around the country. America's Small Business Development Centerhas partnered with American Express to bring visibiilty to this event.

Held on Saturday, November 24, the event has opportunities for small businesses, community organizations, and individuals to get involved, for fun and the well-being of our communities. Here's how to get involved:

  • If you are a small business owner, participate in Small Business Saturday. You can visit and for ideas and marketing information, or talk with an SBA resource partner, such as your local Business Advisor from the Napa-Sonoma SBDC, SCORE, or Women’s Business Center.
  • Rally your neighboring businesses to participate. Be a Neighborhood Champion with ideas at
  • Shop local. For the things you will buy, consider all your local small businesses.  Imagine how desolate your downtown or favorite shopping area would look with empty storefronts displaying “For Lease” signs in the windows instead of merchandise. The money generated by small business goes right back into the local economy, and that’s important because we know that half of working Americans either own or work for a small business. As you plan for your holiday shopping, please consider sharing some of that with small businesses in your community.

Visit to apply for promotional and other resources to help you get involved.
