Cort Munselle

Munselle Civil Engineering is a consulting civil engineering firm that offers a full range of civil engineering and land planning services from preliminary design through construction. Owner Cort Munselle began working as a licensed civil engineer in 2000 and opened Munselle Civil Engineering in 2007. MCE’s experience includes subdivision entitlements and design, private residential estates, commercial development, vineyard erosion control plans, reservoir design and winery site design.

It is the goal of the company to provide innovative and cost effective engineering while providing the client with the highest level of customer service. They establish working relationships with each client by providing timely and efficient project turnaround through quality engineering design. MCE’s experience with regulatory agencies in Sonoma and Napa counties helps clients understand and manage the various complicated processes throughout the engineering stages of development and creates a more positive experience through the life of each job.

The company has been experiencing good growth and with this growth various challenges needed to be addressed. Some of them were as follows: The need to hire additional staff to meet the growing needs of the company; developing a strategy to begin to delegate more responsibility to the other employees within the organization; a plan was needed to offer full time employment to two consultants that are currently working for the company; improving the business structure to make the company run more efficiently; the development of key business indicators to monitor the business activities on a monthly basis; and opening a second location for the business in Marin County.

With SBDC assistance, Munselle hired additional staff including an office manager; empowered the office manager to assume some of the owner’s responsibilities; developed a compensation plan; offered full time employment to his consultants; identified a location in Marin County for a second business; and has initiated a key business indicator report to record the company’s activities for each month.

The company experienced an 80 percent increase in sales comparing 2013 to 2012. Growth for the first five months of 2014 compared to the same period last year grew by 88 percent. Full time employees grew by two comparing 2013 to 2012. The use of consultant services grew by 17 percent comparing the first five months of 2014 to same period in 2013.
